Fernley was born in Grimston in early 1893, the son of Harry Rudd Gamble and Rosanna Gamble, who is listed on the CWGC web-site as Fernby Haxel Gamble.
At the 1901 census, Fernley was living with his parents at Wiggenhall St. Mary, along with his older sister Olive and his younger sisters Mildred Rose and Gladys.
At the 1911 census, Fernley was working as a farm labourer and was living with his parents in Wiggenhall St. Mary, near to King’s Lynn, along with his younger sister Mildred Rose.
Fernley joined the Norfolk Regiment, fighting in the 9th Battalion, and his service number was 15471.
Fernley died on 15 September 1916 and his life is commemorated at the Thiepval Memorial in France.
