Bernard joined the 1st Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment, with service number 9288. He married Lillian Fossey (born 4 April 1888) in late 1909 and they lived at 2 Austins Lane, Ampthill in Bedfordshire.
Bernard died on 13 December 1914 and his life is commemorated at the Bailleul Cemetery in Nord, France.
At the 1939 register, Lillian was still living in the same property in Ampthill along with her children Bernard (aged 25), Frederick (aged 23) and Jack (aged 20) who were all single and working as general labourers at the brickworks. Her youngest two children were born after Bernard’s death, so she may have remarried.
